Humpback Whale

Two classes have now found the humpback whale, so let's try and get some more information about the biggest species we have found so far!Have a good look at the whale in the video and then research online to find out more. Once you have found some exciting facts read the In the Comments section under the video and leave your comment.

    Humpback whales grow to be about 52 feet (16 m) long, weighing 30-50 tons (27-45 tonnes). The females are slightly larger than males, as with all baleen whales. The four-chambered heart of the average humpback whale weighs about 430 pounds (195 kg) - about as much as three average adult human beings. Its cool that they found a whale to!!!!!

    Humpbacks whales are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it. Hampback whales, regularly leap from the water, landing with a tremendous splash. Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection. Females nurse their calves for almost a year, though it takes far longer than that for a humpback whale to reach full adulthood. Calves do not stop growing until they are ten years old.

    Hi! I am in the EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. I absolutely LOVE what you are doing with your class! It is so fascinating! I am going into Biology education and specializing in Marine Biology. This is a great way to get students to learn about our marine ecosystem. But, a fact about humpback whales: They are distinctively known for their songs and also for their breaching the water.
